The Journal of Silly #18
This 48-page small press comix is packed with single panel gag cartoons by a horde of contributors. It's a quick read and loads of fun. I love the concept and I can't recall having ever seen this sort of small press comix before. Kudos to the production and editorial team of Ham Khan and Duncan McCoshan for bringing us this gem. Check their website for subscription info and enough cartoons to give you a flavor of the journal's silliness. A5-size. Adult content.

Weird Muse Productions
by Dan W. Taylor
Dan W. Taylor was one of the original newave cartoonists. In 2006, the memories of small press publishing drew him back and he began creating a new series of books. It's lucky for us he did!

This issue is dedicated to Clay Geerdes and in tribute features cartoons of real news stories, photo collage, and several great new comix and cartoons by Taylor. Zombies March On #5
Tarquin Mandrake's brainchild features plenty of undead flesh-eaters on the front and back covers. Inside the monsters are more often deranged killers or mindless consumers lost in the shopping mall of popular culture. The British cartoonist fills all 24-pages of this A5-size book with one-, two- and four-page comix. The artwork is simple, clean, and engaging. The humor is clever, sarcastic, dark, and at times politically passionate. The cover is printed on green paper, whilst the interior pages are white. £1.20 Adults only. Top

Sentence
Each creator in this British comics anthology was allowed just one sentence for their story. The goal: to provide work accessible to a wide European audience. The artwork and stories range from abstract to traditional, from humorous to dark. Contributors include Nick Abadzis, Matt Abbiss, Patrice Aggs, Malcy Duff, Tom Gauld, Gary Northfield, Dave Shelton, and Mark Stafford. This is a wonderful collection from Rising Trout Press. Originally published at £12.50, I picked it up for £5.00 from Gosh Comics. Top

Popeye Vol. 1 by E.C. Segar
In a word, E.C. Segar's Popeye is awesome.
In fact, it's the best comic strip I've ever read. The characters, artwork, stories, and dialog provide a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience not to be missed. Segar delivers a powerful one-two punch: a nearly daily gag
and a continuing storyline that keeps you coming back for more. Fantagraphics, already established as a premier publisher of classic comic strip collections, has launched the
Popeye series with top-notch book design and production values. With an introduction
by Jules Feiffer and commentary by
Bill Blackbeard, this volume - the first of six -
is a must-have for comics readers. Top
